Provisions of Master Degree Candidate Training Work (Summary) Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine

   The provisions are formulated according to "The People's Republic of China Academic Degree Regulations", "The People's Republic of China Academic Degree Regulations Interim Implementation Measures" and the spirit of the relevant documents of State Ministry of Education, combined with the specific situation of our university. The training plan is made each subject according to the regulations, combined with the actual situation with detailed requirements.  It is executed after the approval of academic degree evaluation committee and record of graduate college. The training plan should include the subject introduction, training objectives, research direction, years of learning, literature reading, academic activities, practical ability, mid-term examination, academic papers, research practice and thesis.

I Training Objective

   1. Good conduct, strict with study, with a strong sense of professionalism and dedication

   2. In subject related, specialty field, master the basic theory and systemic knowledge, with ability to be engaged in scientific research or independent work with special techniques.

   3. Have ability of reading foreign professional materials with one kind of foreign language.

   4.  Familiar with modern information technology, having strong computer application and information acquiring skills.  

   5.  Have physical and mental health.

    II Research Direction

   3-7 research directions are made each subject according to characteristics of the subject. See the details in the training plan of each specialty.

    III College Course and Years of Learning

   The standard system of full-time study for a master's degree is usually 3 years, to pursue a master’s degree on job is usually 4 years. Time for course learning is half a year, half a year after the student is trained under the guidance of the instructor on scientific research ability and degree thesis work in relevant college, teaching and research section, and department. The student can prolong the period of learning, with relevant procedures in accordance with the provisions.

   IV Training Method

   Supervisor responsibility system is used for the master’s training. The master’s steering group is set up, with the supervisor as the head, and 3 – 5 experts of the specialty or specialty related. Main work is as follows: 1. Make individual training plans, supervise and inspect the implementation. 2. Give instructions about study attitude and morality. 3. Direct and inspect graduate students’ course study, scientific research and degree thesis. See the details in “Responsibilities of the Graduate Supervisor in Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine”.

   V Literature Reading

   Literature includes books, serials publications, special literature, etc. Literature reading should be directed by the supervisor. The supervisor can guide the student to read literature of different depth and width according to the different teaching phases. No less than 1 reading report should be completed by the end of the fourth semester by the student, with straight matter text no less than 2000 words. The supervisor should exam them and give assessment. Results could be excellent, good, intermediate, qualified, unqualified, 1 credit is given for each report above qualified level. Result assessment form and reading report should be handed to graduate secretary of the college and kept in the graduate individual study archives. The academic result is recorded into the graduate management system.

   VI Academic Activities

   Academic activities of the master include attending various academic activities organized in the subject field (subject included) and self-academic report or lecture. No less than 6 times of academic activities and 1 time self- academic report or lecture are needed to apply for degree thesis defense. The graduate student needs to fill out "Academic Activities Participating Registration Book of Graduate Students in Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine" to participate in academic activities, with pinions written by the sponsor or the speaker.   Examined and signed by the supervisor before defense, it is handed to graduate secretary of the college and kept in the graduate individual study archives with academic result recorded. 0.5 credit is given for each lecture, 1 credit is given if the student gives an academic lecture.    VII Practical Ability

   1. Teaching Practice

   Teaching practice of certain time is arranged for the master each subject according to the specific conditions. It can be in diverse forms like lecture, trial teaching, experiment or clinical teaching. The time and form of the teaching practice should be recorded clearly in the training plan of the specialty and the details should be written clearly in the individual training plan. Teaching task completed, the graduate student should fill in "Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine Graduates Teaching Practice Registration and Examination Table". 1 credit is given if the result of assessment is qualified. After the assessment, the table is handed to graduate secretary of the college and kept in the graduate individual study archives. The graduate secretary enters graduate management system and inputs the credits. The graduate having the Teacher Qualification Certificate and engaged in teaching is not in this requirement. The credits are given after filling in the application form and approved. 

   2. Clinical Practice                  

   (a) For the second grade subject subordinate to the first grade subject of Chinese medicine and integrated Chinese and Western medicine, certain amount of clinical practice should be arranged for the graduate student doing master’s degree of medical science according to the actual situation of the subject. Time of clinical practice is arranged each subject according to the specific conditions and the specific content should be written in the individual training plan. Clinical practice completed, the graduate student should fill in "Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine Graduates Clinical Practice Examination Table". 1 credit is given if the result of assessment is qualified. After the assessment, the table is handed to graduate secretary of the college and kept in the graduate individual study archives. The graduate secretary enters graduate management system and inputs the credits. The graduate having Certificate of Physician Credentials and engaged in medical work is not in this requirement. The credits are given after filling in the application form and approved.

   (b) For the second grade subject subordinate to the first grade subject of Chinese medicine and integrated Chinese and Western medicine, clinical technique training of the subject and that related to the subject should be arranged for the graduate student doing master’s degree of clinical medicine according to the characteristic of the subject. The detailed requirements are in “Clinical Ability Training Program of Graduates in Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine”. The clinical ability examination for the graduate student doing master’s degree of clinical medicine has three stages which are examination for departments practice, examination for clinical ability of other subjects and examination for clinical ability of the subject. 1 credit is given for each if passed. Examination for clinical ability of other subjects is combined with mid-term examination. Examination for clinical ability of the subject is combined with graduation examination.

   VIII Midterm Examination

   In order to ensure the quality of graduate training, the midterm examination is given at the end of the fourth semester. The college organizes an evaluation group, which gives a comprehensive assessment on the graduate’s moral cultivation, study attitude, course study, literature reading, thesis proposal and other aspects, and puts forward opinions for the assessment. If the exam is not passed, the course of study is extended. The detailed requirements of midterm examination are in “Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine Graduates Midterm Examination Methods”.

   IX Academic Thesis

   Before the graduation thesis defense, the graduate has to publish academic papers related to the graduation thesis on academic journal publication above provincial level under the name of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine. The detailed requirements are implemented according to "Provisions of Academic Papers Publication for Graduates before Graduation in Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine".

   X Scientific Research Practice and Work for Degree Thesis

   Work for the graduate’s degree thesis is comprehensive training for the ability of the graduate in scientific research or specialized technical work. It is very important for cultivating the innovation ability of the graduate students and the ability of discovering problems, analyzing and solving problems with the knowledge learned.

1. Thesis Proposal

   Under the guidance of the supervisor, the graduate students should read literature, combine the actual situation, join in scientific research, determine the topic and write thesis proposal and literature review. At the beginning of the third semester, it should be completed in the department of the subject. The specific requirements are in "Provisional Regulations of Graduate Thesis Proposal Work in Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine".

   2. Report and Inspection in mid-phase of Thesis

   In the project research stage, strict training is given to the graduate on scientific research ability under the guidance of the supervisor. And to a certain stage in the project research, the graduate should make a report about the progress of the project in mid-phase of the thesis inside the college. The college should organize experts to give inspection and put forward opinions and suggestions, in order to guarantee the thesis research work carried out smoothly.

   3. The Experiment Record of Thesis

   The graduate should fill in “Graduate Degree Thesis Experiment Record Book of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine” carefully to record the experiment of the project research. If the degree thesis research content belongs to the project of the university science and technology item management, the graduate may fill in the experiment record book offered by scientific research department of the university without filling in “Graduate Degree Thesis Experiment Record Book of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine”.

   4. Degree Thesis Defense and Writing

   The specific requirements for degree thesis defense are in “Relevant Provisions of Degree Thesis Defense in Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine”. The specific requirements for degree thesis writing are in “Basic Requirements and Format Specification of Degree Thesis in Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine”.

   XI Relevant Requirements of Making the Training Plan for the Master

   The supervisor and steering group should make the training plan of the master carefully according to national regulations on academic degrees, training plan of the subject, and the master’s personal condition, and fill in the training plan schedule carefully. The supervisor must make the training plan in three months after enrollment of the graduate and make two copies. One copy is handed to the graduate teaching secretary of the college and kept in the graduate individual archive and one copy is saved by the graduate himself. In the implementation process if there are some changes due to objective conditions, the training plan can be revised.

   The provisions have been implemented since the graduates enrolled on September 1, 2010. The Training Office of Graduate College is responsible for the interpretation.
